There’s times in life when chance or luck strikes and you find people who just seem like a perfect fit for the community you want to live in. We as had one of these lucky strikes when we met C-Y and Shane from . Although we all lived here at the same time, we didn’t meet in nyc. We first met them at the pop ups they did when we’d travel to the bay (Rebecca’s day job at the time had her traveling to SF kinda often) They were killing it at their pop ups and dinners. Later, when they’d visit from the Bay, we got to feed them and hang out here too. We love their flavors and process - Shane was our sourdough guru during covid!
When we found out they’d be in town for one last NYC pop up we knew that not even a would stop us from getting to see them and enjoy their food one more time.
The house was packed, no surprise. We were lucky to get a 4 top w/ our friends and .
Conversation was great and the team at killed it as always. We forgot to take pictures of a few of the dishes but we ordered everything and all of it was amazing. Grabbed a cookbook (you should too, it’s beautiful)!
We’re excited to see what adventures await this duo with their move to Singapore. Hopefully we’ll be able to come visit one day. Sending you guys so much love!!
Xoxo,
Chris & Rebecca

Available for pre-order until 11/20.

When I closed Monks two years ago, I was terribly burned out. My love for the business was gone. I didn’t even want to cook dinner for my family, much less make painstakingly handcrafted food for strangers. Winding down the business aspect of Monks was brutal: sifting through over a decade’s worth of equipment, supplies, bills, hopes, and dreams took almost a year and was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I hadn’t decided to close Monks. I just had to face the reality that I couldn’t do it anymore. There was no plan. Just the realization that the stress and worry had overwhelmed the joy and creativity. I told people that it wasn’t the end, that pop ups were on the way, but I also was feeling defeated in a way I had never before. I had poured everything into Monks for 12 years and I had nothing left.
Fast forward two years: I’m in a better place. I still love cooking and I still want to painstakingly hand craft food for you. I remembered that none of you were strangers. I remembered that fresh food still tastes good. I remembered all the things that inspired me to found Monks in the first place.
The lessons of the last 14 years are still with me. They are making me a better chef. In this iteration of Monks, the food is still the guide but we want to do things a little different. We want to avoid the traps of what came before and tease out the essence of what made it a great experience. We are inviting you to join us for a series of intimate little dinner parties. Come eat at our table.
First event is a good old fashion backyard bbq cookout. It’s August 31. Tickets and info in bio.

Stopped over at to grab some before we went to see our take on the !!
We’ve been wanting to stop by for a minute. Today seemed like the perfect day to show some love and get some amazing food before the game!!
Remember it’s important to support local, especially local vegan food businesses!!
Pull up and show them support. It’s really the only thing that keeps the doors open.

Another fantastic dinner . Very different than the last time we were here but the seasonality of everything really shined through.
For all our friends up in NYC it’s really a quick trip on the or by car. It’s definitely worth it.

What people say
When it comes to barbecue restaurants, there's nothing quite like the smoky, savory flavors that come from slow-cooked meats. But what if you're looking for a plant-based option? That's where Monk's Meats comes in. This vegetarian and vegan restaurant on Starr Street is inspired by traditional BBQ techniques, but everything they make is completely plant-based and dairy-free.
One of the things that sets Monk's Meats apart is their commitment to using high-quality ingredients and spices. They load up on so many spices for their dishes, like their chorizo-stuffed peppers or tamales with jackfruit and BBQ sauce. And if you're looking for something sweet to balance out all that smokiness, they've got you covered with their vegan donuts.
But it's not just about the food at Monk's Meats - it's also about the atmosphere. Whether you're stopping by for brunch or grabbing a bite at one of their pop-up events around town, you'll find a fun and welcoming environment where everyone can enjoy delicious food together.
So if you're looking for a unique twist on classic BBQ flavors, head over to Monk's Meats on Starr Street. You won't be disappointed!
