This ongoing series explores Jain cooking and cuisine, rooted in mindfulness, restraint, and deep respect for the natural world. Weâre honored to host the first dinner in a new ongoing series at Avant Garden - an exploration of the depth, philosophy, and beauty of Jain cooking and cuisine.
Many of you have asked for this, and weâve been listening. Our culinary team, led by Chef Juan, is currently working with great care on a menu that thoughtfully engages with the principles of Jain cuisine.
Jain cooking is rooted in mindfulness, nonviolence, and deep respect for the natural world. Traditionally, it avoids root vegetables and ingredients that disturb the soil, prioritizing what grows above ground, seasonal produce, restraint, and balance. The result is a cuisine that is both highly intentional and quietly complex - one that challenges chefs to create depth and elegance through technique rather than excess.
For this inaugural dinner, guests will enjoy a five-course menu plus dessert, served family-style, designed to be shared and experienced communally. Each course will reflect an ongoing exploration of Jain cuisine as interpreted through the Avant Garden lens.

What people say
Vegetarian and vegan restaurants have been gaining popularity in recent years, and for good reason. These establishments offer a wide variety of delicious and healthy plant-based dishes that cater to all tastes and dietary needs. Avant Garden, located on East 7th Street in New York, is one such restaurant that has been making waves in the vegan dining scene.
What sets Avant Garden apart from other vegetarian/vegan restaurants is its focus on contemporary, veggie-centric cuisine. The restaurant's CEO & Founder Ravi DeRossi, who previously ran top cocktail bars, brings his expertise in creating unique flavor combinations to the world of vegan cuisine. The result is a menu that features some of New York's most beloved vegan dishes.
One standout feature of Avant Garden is its tapas bar & restaurant concept. This allows diners to sample a variety of small plates and shareable dishes, perfect for groups or those who want to try multiple items on the menu. And with curated global natural wines available to pair with each dish, the dining experience at Avant Garden is truly elevated.
The Michelin Guide sums it up perfectly: "This is excellent food that just happens to be vegan." Whether you're a committed vegan or simply looking to try something new, Avant Garden offers an unforgettable dining experience that will leave you feeling satisfied and inspired.
