The basics of thali!
Thali is a Hindi word for plate.
🌺🌸🌼
A thali is usually accompanied by small round bowls called katoris, much like a bento box.

Thali is a complete meal served on a single plate. Characterized by eye-popping variety and an imposing quantity, thali easily contains multiple dishes (including rice and bread).

Thali has roots in Ayurveda (“Ayur” meaning life, “veda” meaning knowledge), the ancient Indian holistic system of medicine. The Ayurvedic philosophy states that any disease is the result of an imbalance and that to correct this imbalance, the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—must be tended to, with food as one of the primary means.

To give you a sense of ingredients that embody these tastes across Indian cuisines…

What people say

Indian restaurants are known for their bold flavors, aromatic spices, and diverse dishes. Babu Ji NYC takes this reputation to the next level with their creative and fun approach to Indian dining. The team behind Babu Ji, Jessi and Jennifer Singh, have already made a name for themselves in Australia with their acclaimed restaurants Dhaba at the Mill, Horn Please, and Babu Ji. Now they bring their signature style to New York City.

The name Babu Ji itself is playful and inviting. In Hindi, it refers to the self-appointed neighborhood ambassador who knows everyone and everything that’s happening in the village. This character is enthusiastic about food and hospitality, reveling in his meals with laughter and joy. At Babu Ji NYC, this same spirit is embodied in the restaurant's ethos of gregarious and spirited dining.

But it's not just about the atmosphere - the food at Babu Ji is simple yet remarkable. High-quality ingredients are cooked earnestly to create a regularly changing menu that spans Indian street food, cross-regional curries, and tandoori specialties. And let's not forget about the beverage selection - Babu Ji has stocked their fridges well with a large selection of craft beer, imports, and an approachable but interesting wine list.

Jessi Singh himself is behind the pots at Babu Ji NYC, bringing his celebrated cooking skills to New York City. His dishes have been praised by some of Australia's most respected publications.

Overall, if you're looking for an Indian restaurant that offers more than just great food - but also a lively atmosphere full of character - then look no further than Babu Ji NYC on E 13th Street.
