Zum Schneider Zum Schneider was a German restaurant and beer garden located on Avenue C in New York City. It first opened its doors in 2000, offering a traditional Bavarian-German menu along with 12 German beers on tap. The restaurant quickly became popular and played a key role in starting the NYC Biergarten craze. Zum Schneider was also known for its seasonal specialties and festive events such as Karneval, Oktoberfest, Adventsingen, and New Year's Eve. The owner Sylvester Schneider, originally from Weßling am Weßlinger See, Bavaria, created the restaurant to recreate the beergarden atmosphere he missed from his homeland. Zum Schneider has been permanently closed.

Dear Zum Schneider Friends,

With profound sadness, we share the heartbreaking news that our longtime associate, partner, and above all dear friend, Sylvia, passed away last week after a two-year battle with cancer.

Sylvia was a truly special person to everyone who knew her. We are sure that many of you will remember her warmth, professionalism, kindness, and wonderful sense of humor.

For the past 23 years, she was at the heart of the Zum Schneider community and touched the lives of so many guests, friends, and coworkers.

Our loss is immeasurable, and Sylvia will forever remain in our hearts.

We will host a memorial for Sylvia between our two Oktoberfest weekends. We feel there could be no more fitting time to remember her, as Oktoberfest was every bit as much Sylvia’s baby as it was Zum Schneider’s. It is also a time when so many of the people who worked alongside her over the years are together again, giving us the opportunity to celebrate her life as one community.

We will share details closer to the date.

Our thoughts are with Sylvia’s partner, her family, and all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

In Memoriam. Rest in peace, dear Sylvia.

Sylvester and the entire Zum Schneider Family

What people say

German restaurants are known for their hearty and flavorful dishes, as well as their extensive beer selections. Zum Schneider, located on Avenue C in New York, is a prime example of a German restaurant that excels in both areas.

One of the standout features of Zum Schneider is their impressive selection of 12 German beers on tap. Whether you're a fan of light lagers or dark stouts, there's something for everyone to enjoy. And with a traditional Bavarian-German menu to match, you can indulge in classic dishes like schnitzel and bratwurst while sipping on your favorite brew.

But Zum Schneider isn't just a great spot for food and drinks - it's also a hub for community events throughout the year. From Karneval to Oktoberfest to New Year's Eve celebrations, there's always something happening at this lively establishment.

And if you're planning a group outing, Zum Schneider makes it easy with their reservation system. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just looking for an excuse to gather with friends and family, this Bavarian indoor biergarten is the perfect spot.
