Reposted from Today, something happened that most people will never think twice about: For the very first time in his life, our 12-year-old son Maddox ordered straight from the menu.

Living with severe, life-threatening food allergies (anaphylaxis) means that something as ordinary as grabbing lunch or going out for dinner simply isn’t part of your life. While other families make memories in restaurants, we’ve always brought our own food. Every meal has been planned, prepared and checked. Every ingredient matters. Even here in the US, we’ve been cooking in our apartment using food we brought all the way from the Netherlands.

So watching him stand there, look at a menu, and simply choose what he wanted - just like every other kid - was one of those moments that quietly hits you. Something so ordinary for almost everyone else… yet something he had never experienced in twelve years. As his dad, my heart couldn’t have been happier to finally give him that experience. Just for a little while, Maddox didn’t have to feel different.

A huge shout-out to Baked Cravings. Before our trip, the owners patiently answered all my questions by email, giving us the confidence to visit. And once we got there, they were incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and professional.

“You guys are buying the whole store!” the employee laughed.

Yes… yes, we did. ❤️

To get to the location on Lexington Avenue in New York, you can take the subway and get off at the 86th Street station. From there, walk east towards Lexington Avenue and turn left. The destination will be on your right.

If you prefer to drive, you can take the FDR Drive and exit at 96th Street. Turn left onto 1st Avenue and then turn right onto East 86th Street. Finally, turn left onto Lexington Avenue and the destination will be on your right.
