Andre Easton curated a reading list, exclusively for NEFER, rooted in Black radical thought, political education, resistance, and collective liberation.
Featuring:
• A Fighting Dream: The Political Writings of Claudia Jones
• Groundings with My Brothers by Walter Rodney
• Socialist Reconstruction
• Rasta and Resistance by Horace Campbell
These are books that help us think more deeply about the world Eleanor Bumpurs lived in, the movements her death galvanized, and the political traditions that continue to shape struggles for justice today.

NEFER is proud to be part of NYC’s Work, Learn & Grow Program with .ny and NYC Department of Youth and Community Development — and honestly, they sent us a star. ✨
Meet Tien: senior, rising culinary arts + entrepreneurship major, manga and fantasy book fan, and now one of the creative minds behind some of the most delicious custom drinks we’ve had behind the coffee bar. Every drink he makes is unexpected, imaginative, and way too good. Ask him what he’s reading, tell him what flavors you like, and let him put you on to something magical.
Beyond the coffee bar, Tien is also learning the real mechanics of running a business — helping build the financial structure of our menu, understanding pricing and operations, and even assisting with book selection for the shop.
Oh and please believe . Ask him!
We also want to give flowers to Dwayne Brown and the entire .ny team. The care they put into connecting young people with small businesses and community spaces like NEFER matters deeply. This is how we grow the Bronx: by creating opportunities for young people who will one day create opportunities for others.
And because they really understand our spirit, Dwayne curated a limited selection of FREE books centered on imagination, justice, belonging, acceptance, and creativity — all the things we try to nurture here every day.
But here’s the best part 👀
Come into NEFER and play NEFER trivia with Tien for a chance to win one of Dwayne’s books!
We put on for our city!

Join us for THE FIRE THIS TIME, a radical historical reading series led by Terrence Freeman examining the entangled histories of racial capitalism, colonialism, and resistance across the Atlantic world.
Why Terrance chose Open Veins of Latin America as our next read:
"This work offers a comprehensive, materialist analysis of the historical development of LATAM, detailing how racial capitalism and its bedfellows–colonialism, imperialism, and fascism–subjected the continent to six centuries of exploitation that fueled the enrichment of Euro-colonial societies and imperialist nations at the expense of the indigenous and Black people of various Latin American societies."

Truthfully, this is the same question we asked ourselves when creating NEFER.
We wanted to build a space that invites curiosity, connection, and pause, so we made murals that make you stop and think. Where the coffee and teas carry stories from around the world. Where the books ask us to reconsider each other — and ourselves.
In a world shaped by grind culture and disconnection, we wanted NEFER to feel like an exhale.
A place to return to yourself, and maybe even find each other there too.

Some stories do not loosen their grip on a city. They linger in the walls, in memory, in the language people use when they try to explain why they still gather, protest, mourn, and demand more.
In 1984, Eleanor Bumpurs — a 66-year-old Black grandmother living in public housing in the Bronx — was killed by NYPD officers during an attempted eviction. The violence of her death reverberated far beyond her apartment, becoming a defining moment in New York City’s reckoning with racist policing.
Join us at NEFER Bookcafe for an evening with historian LaShawn Harris as she discusses Tell Her Story: Eleanor Bumpurs & the Police Killing That Galvanized New York City — a deeply researched and profoundly intimate work that restores Eleanor Bumpurs to the center of her own story.
In conversation with Andre Easton, Harris explores memory, archival history, Black womanhood, community witness, and the movements born in the aftermath of loss.
