I remember as a small child seeing “White and Colored” drinking fountains in the South, also from my childhood; an image remains vivid of watching from the car as my mother shopped, a black man cleaning the windows of a store front as a white woman exited the store carrying a mirror that she had just purchased, she had the man stop his work and clean the mirror for her; for years my father saved a paper windshield flyer, as though it was an historical artifact, exhorting the public to “Buy Right Buy White, Don’t Mongrelize Your Children”. The flyers were printed by the White Citizens Council as the K*K was euphemistically known then. The intent was to boycott businesses that employed black workers. As a young military family, my parents and siblings visited with the family of a black military doctor at the time, we children played together as the adults smoked ci******es and drank martinis before dinner. Shortly afterwards, I recall my father telling my mother “sotto voce” that he was told by his superiors that he had broken protocol by comporting with a black family. Later, stripping Muhammad Ali of his championship title was described as an outrage and “outright hypocrisy” in my family. I don’t recall hearing the word racism.

The scope of most of my professional career has come with the sense that there was an obligation, although limited, to help improve some of the conditions in the world. Our society is ill, both physically, caused by our dietary habits and morally, through our acquiescence to factory food production. Social and economic inequality is magnified and ennobled by influence peddling that has turned any possibility of a representative democracy into a rule by special interests and the wealthy.

Even with this lofty and privileged perspective, I must realize that under the current social circumstances, I have not done enough to help correct, change and call out the insidious wrongs that are perpetuated around me. I must commit to not being complicit through inaction. -Chef Marc Meyer
