Dear FRIENDS,
Many of you have been asking about GENIE OTWAY and how she is doing, so we are sending out this update. ❤

7-8-23 Update:
Hello Friends,
After almost 2 months since filing through red tape for "food stamps" and health benefits, the Otways have not received a temporary food benefits card yet or health insurance. Genie is working daily on finding a sustainable solution to their housing and work situation. In addition, sadly, the Otway's beloved cat, Pyewacket, passed away and the Otways had to of course deal with vet and burial costs. They have a small amount of belongings in temporary storage that they are stressed about losing each month when the fee becomes due. In other words, Genie still needs your support while they make progress. Thank you for caring!

Below is the previous email we sent on May 6 for those of you who asked for a copy.

Hello Friends,
For over 50 years, Genie Gilmore Otway and the Otway family have been a pillar of the community in the East Village. Through their beloved businesses, Theatre 80 St Marks, William Barnacle Tavern, and The Museum of the American Gangster, they provided employment, friendship, and a port in the storm for those in need.
Tragically, after a long battle to recover after the effects of COVID business closings, last week Genie and her family were evicted from their historic building and evicted from their home.
The future is very uncertain for Genie and she needs some financial help to tide her over while the situation is addressed. We're seeking donations to help her cover basic needs for medicine, food, basic necessities and storage fees for the possessions she managed to salvage from her home.

Genie has a huge heart and has been so generous to so many over the years. Here is our chance to support her. Any donation, big or small, will go a long way to help her through this incredibly challenging time.
Here is PIX11's Marvin Scott covering the situation a few days before the eviction.
