Bensonhurst has been one of my favorite neighborhoods in NYC for a loooong time, and though it has changed a bit over the years, its old school Italian-American charm seems to be here for the long run.🇮🇹🇺🇸 In Bensonhurst, you’ll hear people speaking Italian, and there are a lot of small mom & pop restaurants and bakeries. But my absolute favorite spots here are J&V pizzeria and Villabate Alba.💖
I love these spots so much that after I finished my first semester of law school in 2021, I took the train down here as a treat! If you swing by make sure to say hi to Vito (and tell him I sent ya!🍕). He’s Sicilian-born and has been running J&V for quite some time, and it’s well agreed upon amongst locals that no pizzeria offers that classic NY slice like they do.🍕🍕
At Villabate Alba, you’ll be greeted to an array of Sicilian desserts, like Iris, Cassata, cannoli, and even brioche con gelato (or granita in the summer). These two spots don’t shift and switch with trends, and instead are concrete institutions not only in Bensonhurst, but in NYC.🇮🇹💖🇺🇸

J & V Pizzeria is a legendary pizza place located on 18th Avenue in New York. Founded by two Italian guys, Johnny Mortillaro and Vincent DeGrezia, in 1950, this pizzeria has been serving the best pizza in Bensonhurst for over 70 years. Johnny from Sicily and Vinny from Naples combined their secret Italian recipes to create a unique taste that has become famous throughout the city.
One of the most remarkable things about J & V Pizzeria is that they were responsible for introducing the idea of selling pizza by the slice. This innovation made it easier for people to afford without having to buy the whole pie. They began selling slices through an open window in front of the pizzeria at just 15 cents per slice and 5 cents for soda.
Today, J & V Pizzeria continues to serve delicious pizza with a wide variety of toppings. Their crust is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, making every bite a delight. The atmosphere inside is cozy and welcoming, with friendly staff always ready to help you choose your favorite slice.
