Julius, Bar is a historic establishment located on the corner of Waverly Place and West 10th Street that has been a popular spot for sports figures, celebrities, and gay men since its inception in the mid-19th century. It was the site of the famous "Sip-In" organized by members of the Mattachine Society in 1966 to challenge New York State Liquor Authority regulations that prohibited bars from serving drinks to suspected gays and lesbians. Today, Julius' continues to serve as a popular gay bar, pub, and bar & grill in Greenwich Village.

To get to W 10th Street in New York, the closest subway stations are Christopher St/Sheridan Sq (1 train), West 4th St (A/B/C/D/E/F/M trains), and 14th St/8th Ave (A/C/E/L trains). From any of these subway stations, it is a short walk to W 10th Street.
For those driving, there are parking garages located on nearby streets such as Greenwich Ave and Waverly Pl. Street parking may also be available but can be limited.
Once on W 10th Street, the gay bar and pub can easily be spotted by its outdoor seating area and signage. The bar & grill has a separate entrance but is located in the same building as the gay bar.

Julius, Bar is a historic establishment located on the corner of Waverly Place and West 10th Street in New York City. With roots dating back to the mid-19th century, Julius' has been a popular spot for sports figures and celebrities since the 1930s. In the 1960s, it became known as a gathering place for gay men, and played an important role in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
In April of 1966, members of the Mattachine Society organized what became known as the "Sip-In" at Julius', challenging New York State Liquor Authority regulations that prevented bars from serving drinks to known or suspected gay men or lesbians. This event was part of a larger campaign to clarify laws and rules that inhibited the running of gay bars as legitimate establishments and to stop harassment of gay bar patrons.
Today, Julius' continues to be a beloved neighborhood pub and bar & grill. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly, with a diverse crowd of locals and visitors alike.
