Ever wonder why it’s called Pearl Street? 🦪

The answer goes back to New York’s long history with oysters.

When Henry Hudson sailed into New York Harbor in 1609, the waters surrounding the city were home to vast oyster reefs. Oysters were so abundant that their shells became part of the city itself, used for everything from paving streets to making mortar.

The name Pearl Street dates back to the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam, when part of today’s street was known as Paerlstraat, a name linked to the oyster shells found along the shoreline.

Back then, Pearl Street also roughly followed the edge of Manhattan. As the city grew, landfill extended the shoreline further into the East River toward what is now Water Street.

More than 400 years later, oysters are still part of the story.

Pearl Street OysterFest is on now through September 17th, with food and drink specials at Fraunces Tavern and Lucky Tiger, plus Wolf Hound Oyster Stout pouring at both!

To get to the pub/bar and beer bar located on Pearl Street in New York, you can take the subway and get off at the Wall Street station. From there, it's just a short walk to the establishment.
