🏅 Meet Carlos Varon, our 2026 History & Preservation Award winner.
A tavern only reaches 197 years when the people in the community decide that the past is worth protecting. Carlos spends his life doing exactly that for veterans across the country, with a decades-long focus on honoring those who are buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery, close by to Neir’s Tavern.
Carlos serves as Volunteer Location Coordinator for Wreaths Across America at Cypress Hills National Cemetery and rides with the Patriot Guard Riders of New York, supporting veterans and military families all year long. An internationally recognized Hanshi, (an 8th-degree black belt), he has spent more than fifty years teaching and preserving traditional martial arts. He is also a photographer and storyteller who documents veterans, memorials, and community events.
Wherever he travels, Carlos makes a point of visiting national cemeteries to honor the people buried there. Remembrance, for him, is not an occasion. It is a habit.
Drop a congratulations for Carlos in the comments 👇
Then come celebrate him and all of our 2026 Ambassadors at the 197th Anniversary Block Party, Saturday, October 3rd. Admission is free, and the first 197 people to register and attend receive a surprise gift.
Want to give back a little more? When you register, place a message in our Anniversary Journal (the keepsake program which will be distributed to guests at the Block Party), or buy a collector's edition Road to 200 souvenir keychain in advance. 🎟️ Both help fund the celebration.

🏅 Meet Richard Fogal, our 2026 Community Service Award winner.
When the pandemic shut Woodhaven down, Richard started the "This Is Woodhaven" Facebook group and began buying groceries from a local store for neighbors who needed them. Then he called Loycent Gordon, and Neir's became the primary location where families came to pick up their food.
Richard is a true blue Woodhaven-ite through and through. He went to P.S. 97 and J.H.S. 210, came back to the neighborhood in 1964 to stay, and spent 22 years at IBM before starting his own business. He used his technical skills to improve the food distribution by creating a reservation program so families could claim what they need with dignity, and without waiting in a long line.
Years later, he is still at it. Richard organizes the distribution for our Thanksgiving Food Drive every year, and "This Is Woodhaven" is still where the neighborhood goes to share news, ask for help, and look out for one another.

We might need to work on our lines 🤣, but the boroughs have officially connected! 🤝
It was an honor hosting Barry Joseph from the Brooklyn Seltzer Museum right here at Neir’s Tavern. Even better?
We are incredibly proud to announce that both of our historic, independent businesses are now official stops on a curated tour bringing visitors directly to our doors.
A massive thank you to and for making this possible.

Big events in Queens shouldn’t mean leaving small Queens businesses behind. 🛑
That’s why my U.S. Open hack this year is bypassing the main food lines and heading straight to The Backyard x17 to support The Nourish Spot.
Mother-daughter owners Dawn and Jade are crushing it on a global stage, appearing at the Open for a record-breaking 5 years in a row!
So proud to see our local community getting the recognition and revenue they deserve.
If you’re at the tournament, go show them some love. Let’s go Queens! 🎾
Community Conquers All.

🏅 Meet Rachel Kellner, our 2026 Small Business Champion.
Rachel is a social worker turned small business owner, and her compassion is evidenced by the purpose she brings to leading her business every day, and to everyone in the community around her.
As owner of Aigner Chocolates, one of New York City's oldest chocolate shops, she uses chocolate to do more than make people happy. She uses it to strengthen community ties, support local schools, and lift up voices that may not otherwise be heard.
She also serves as Board Chair of Metro Village of Forest Hills Inc., advocating for small business growth and inclusion along Metropolitan Avenue. In 2024 she launched the Cocoa Joy Community Bar, a fundraising initiative that helps schools and nonprofits reach their goals.
Historic small businesses in Queens look out for one another. Rachel is a major part of why that is true.
