Most of you knew Diana as a friend, as I also did eventually, but I first got to know her as an employee. Spoiler alert, she was one of the best I've had the privilege to work with. If memory serves, or doesn't at this age, I think George Columbo first introduced me to her at Blue Ruin on a random hangout night in the early 2010s. I think she was working the bar, or just hanging there, but she was green as lettuce when it came to bartending. But, as with everything, she was willing to give it a full on try and learn it. Again, Im not sure, but I believe I offered her the job as we could always use another name on the roster at Iron Horse.
I don't recall training her, or any of the first few months with her, but I quickly realized she was a go-getter. She hussled at every turn, and the best part was she made it look totally natural. She was genuine. Her quirkiness and silly approach to life made everyone feel at home right away. There was little she wouldn't do to entertain and keep the crowd wanting more. Time passed and she become an Iron Horse entertainment champion behind the bar. She even learned how to make some drinks ;)
The longer she worked, the more people that she made friends with along the way. It was great to see her grow into the role of Iron Horse bartender/entertainer. She became a star employee very quickly, and before long, she was the one training all the newbies on the swing, behind the bar and everything inbetween that made that job perfect for her personality.
She always took a couple weeks off every year for her "su***de birthday" adventures, to Africa, Brasil, Himalayas, you name it. The girl had no bounds to put herself in situations most of us would run from. But somehow she always survived and returned to pour another drink. The years passed, the fun behind the bar kept happening, and we became friends hanging outside the bar life. I will miss my friend, very much.
I'm just scratching the surface here, but in a nutshell, she lived thrice as hard as the rest of us mear mortals. She will live forever in my mind.
