Long before Little Owl and Market Table, there was Daddio on Leroy Street, tucked right between them. Since the 1990s, it was one of my favorite late night stops. Like so many cooks and restaurant people, I’d end up there after service. It was our neighborhood clubhouse.

Over the years I became friends with the owner, Phil. One thing that always caught my eye were the green flood lights outside. Phil and I shared an appreciation for ma*****na, and those lights were a quiet little wink to anyone who understood.

Then came the pandemic. I read that Daddio wasn’t going to reopen, and Phil confirmed it. That night, after service, my tiny skeleton crew and I walked down to Leroy Street. We didn’t have a ladder, so we did what restaurant people do—we improvised. We climbed on top of each other until we were just “high” enough to rescue those green lights.

Today they’re still shining.

Every time I see them, I think of one of my favorite bars in New York City, the friendships made there, and a place that meant so much to so many of us.
