The outpouring of love these past few days has been overwhelming. We will miss you all!
It is with profound sadness that I break the news that Pearl Oyster Bar is closing.
The fact is, independent restaurants, with the current dynamics, are getting to be a thing of the past. For those of us that own and work in them it’s no secret, and something we’ve been struggling with for some time. The pandemic certainly brought new and previously unheard of challenges, but this has been coming for a while. Sadly, we can no longer keep up with the rising cost of doing business.
I’d like to raise a glass to:
All of our friends and regulars, locally and around the world, some of whom have been making pilgrimages to the restaurant since it opened in 1997 and for making Pearl the beloved place it has been for 25 years.
Our staff, past and present, who have been every bit as important as the food. Over the years, a few of these folks have had unusually long tenures: it’s one of the things that made Pearl feel like home. Much love and gratitude to all of you, especially Maria, whose vivacious presence for almost 2 1/2 decades lead people to believe that she was the owner!
Our anonymous benefactor last year and to Uncle Sam, a heartfelt thank you for the funds that kept us going through the pandemic.
Our landlords, the Jakobsons, who took a chance on an unknown chef with a good idea and the Brodsky Organization, who did everything they could to keep us in place during the last terrible couple of years-they give landlords a good name.
And lastly, my mother Eleanor, and grandmother Pearle, who gave me the support and inspiration to open a little restaurant in the big city.
As of now, our last service will be Saturday, October 29.
