We moved from Bleecker to Battery Park City to experience the joy of not having to climb the stairs of a four-story walk-up. A neighbor had moved there and was delighted with elevator living. We moved to 275 South End Ave and lived there for 11 years.

On the morning of Sept 11th, Catherine and I were having a second cup of coffee when we heard a big explosion. It was a two-part explosion... Boom Boom, very deep. I thought it was far away and made mention that it must have been a very big explosion but seemed far away. Catherine went to the living room just in
time to see an airliner pass very close to the top of our building. She became frightened because she could only see the bottom of the aircraft, it was that close and thought it would hit us but instead a second later, we heard a second very loud deep explosion and a collective “OH NO” from the sea of people down below.

We made our way down the 25 flights and went around our building to South End Ave and looking up we could see the black, red line of very hot fire across the entire tower nearer to us. I couldn’t see how the building could survive such a fire and took Catherine’s hand and we made our way up West St. The streets were packed. People were stunned and just staring up in
disbelief. We jostled our way through the crowd and got to Houston St and made a right toward the store at 201 Bleecker. We surfaced on the corner of 6th Ave and Houston St right in front of the fire station. We watched as the firemen pulled their engine out of its bay and put on their gear and fearlessly jumped on board and headed down to the Twin Towers. Catherine and I went to the store at 201 Bleecker. A few minutes later while watching from
outside the store I saw the towers come down. Many of those firemen we saw gearing up and heading downtown perished in the collapse. It has been 25 years since that day. Never a day goes by that I do not think about those fearless firemen who rushed down to the Twin Towers. They are in my heart and mind every day. I will never forget them.

- Take the subway to Bleecker Street Station (4, 6, B, D, F or M train) and take the exit towards Bleecker Street. The coffee shop should be a short walk from the station.

Directions to Bleecker Street via driving/parking:
- From the north, take I-95 South to Exit 1 for NY-9A/West Street towards Downtown. Turn left onto West Street and continue straight onto 6th Avenue. Turn right onto Houston St and then left onto MacDougal St. Finally, turn left onto Bleecker St where you can find a parking garage nearby.
- From the south, take I-95 North to Exit 14 towards Brooklyn Bridge/Downtown Manhattan/Civic Center. Merge onto FDR Drive and take Exit 5 towards 42nd St/U.N./NY-9A. Turn left onto E 23rd St/United Nations Plaza and continue straight until you reach Houston St. Turn right onto MacDougal St and then make another right onto Bleecker St where there is parking available in a nearby garage.
