DREAM TEAM.

Our crew planted roots here in NYC from Ethiopia, Senegal, and Burkina Faso, bringing a bounty of knowledge, wisdom, and experiences with them. Many have been with us since well before Covid. They've given Bunna the personality she is known for, and they treat her like their own home. It is a blessing beyond words!

You've seen their faces, so why not know their names?
This summer we will be profiling a selection of our wonderful staff, to fill you in a bit more on the person behind the smile. There are amazing stories to be told!

More to come.

It's fasting season. Sounds ironic for a restaurant but it's our whole reason for being. Ethiopiand and Eritrean Orthodox is all about abstainig from meat and alcohol. Our menu is loaded with delicious plant-based beyaynetu, amazing coffees, teas, and mocktails. Been doing it since 2011.

This year we are sharing Tsom with our Muslim brothers and sisters' Ramadan observances. We are in this together, and glad to share the experience.

Clear your mind, embellish your soul.

This Wed, 2/4: Dualing Mbira, Kevin Nathaniel () and S**o Myoji ().

Starts at 7:30. Free with your meal. Everything is Eshi.

A visionary musician who, with voice and ancient African instruments, channels sound as a universal healing force. Together, breathing rhythms to the beat of our synchronized hearts, Kevin Nathaniel resonates songs of unity and the “big picture” of love in beautiful ways! A long-time devotee of mbira, kalimba, circle song, drum, dance, meditation, and yoga; a world-traveled music healer sharing the musical medicine of the ancient, the now, and the beyond, Kevin Nathaniel brings a fresh, deep experience of the beauty of sound. Kevin Nathaniel’s music is an invitation for all to come together, to share in song, laughter, positivity, movement, prayer, and breath.

Kevin Nathaniel was “called” to music by the magical sound of the mbira immediately and mysteriously after graduating “Scholar of the House” at Yale University. He then worked closely with legendary Zimbabwean mbira master Ephat Mujuru for many years. Kevin continues the mbira/kalimba legacy, creatively working to expand upon it. He has worked with a great variety of artists including Alice Walker, Oprah Winfrey, Jonathan Demme, Thomas Mapfumo, Miriam Makeba, Bobby McFerrin, Niles Rodgers, Madonna, Philip Glass, and Nana Vasconcelos.

The multi-instrumentalist, S**o Myoji’sj musical experiences are broad; Blues, Funk, Rock, Bossa Nova, Salsa, Jazz, and Free Improvisational music. She blends all together with her native Japan’s melodies and sensibility to express love and gratitude to nature and the Universe and her music uplifts audience’s spirit.

S**o appears in clubs, galleries, festivals, and healing/wellness events in Japan and U.S., mostly in the New York City area, including the Celebrating Women Composer Festival, the Vision Festival, the WHAM Festival, and other venues and events. S**o offers various configurations of the ensemble; solo, duo, trio, and often brings the choir, extra percussionists and dancers, depending on the size and occasion of the event.

THE LEEBEN TINOS TRIO
Monthly Residency @ Bunna Cafe
Thursday 2/5 at 7:30pm.
Free with your dinner.

We are so so happy to present a monthly residency of habesha virtuoso Leeben Tinos' first group in the USA!

The Leeben Tinos Trio features Leeben on keys, Adam Turay on bass, and, Morgan Greenstreet (aka Modrums!) on percussion.

Leeben Tinos is perhaps the most exciting Ethiopian artist to plant roots in NYC in many many years. Coming from a well known music industry family, Leeben has been pursuing his musical talents since age 5. Originally classically trained, he picked up jazz at the age of 14, and has since performed with Ethio-jazz greats in Addis Ababa -- including with our beloved family at Fendika -- and now blends his classical training with Ethiopian and modern jazz influences to create unique, original compositions.

Don't miss this one of a kind series!
