Today, Soccer Tavern lost a true legend. 💔
Frank McNamara — our beloved “Bonjella” — passed away Saturday at 88 years old. A proud man from County Limerick. 🇮🇪
Frank brought laughter, stories, and a smile that could light up the Tavern. If you ever heard him say “Hold the phone, Bonjella!” you know exactly the kind of character he was.
Frank wasn’t just a customer… he was family, an icon of Soccer Tavern, and a part of its soul.
The word “Bonjella” will live on forever inside these walls, just like Frank’s spirit always will.
Our deepest sympathy and prayers go out to Jimmy, Eileen, and the entire family during this difficult time.
Raise a pint for Bonjella tonight. 🍻
Rest easy, legend.

What people say
Soccer Tavern is a hidden gem in the heart of Brooklyn's 8th Avenue Chinatown Sunset Park. This Irish pub has been around since the prohibition era in 1929, and it still retains its old-school charm. The bar's owner and manager, Brendan Farley, has been a friendly face in the neighborhood since 1986 when he immigrated from Ireland. He welcomes everyone to come and have a good time at Soccer Tavern.
The bar's decor is reminiscent of a bygone era, with linoleum floors and wood paneling that transport you back to a time when bars were a casual place to unwind with friends after a long day. The dart tournament trophies lined up against the back wall add to the bar's nostalgic feel.
Soccer Tavern is not just any Irish pub; it's a neighborhood staple for old-timers and newcomers alike. It provides a melting pot of Scandinavian, Irish, and Asian culture that reflects the diversity of the neighborhood. Whether you're looking for a place to watch soccer or just want to enjoy some drinks with friends, Soccer Tavern is the perfect spot.
