As many of you know, the name “Alita” is short for Abuelita and it was the nickname I had for my grandmother. Her real name was Ligia Córdoba and she passed away yesterday afternoon surrounded by her closest family and friends.
She was many things to many people; a second mom, a devoted coworker, a beloved customer who never missed an opportunity to gloat about her grandchildren.
For me, she was Alita. She was the first person I saw when I was born (allegedly), she taught me the importance of bringing people together through food, and is the reason I learned how to cook with love.
Paolo and I wanted to create a cafe that felt as welcoming as my grandmother’s kitchen, and naming it Alita was a no brainer. She was really moved when I told her we named it after her, and the banana bread quickly became her favorite treat.
We just celebrated the cafe’s 5 year anniversary, and the turnout was unbelievable. It makes me confident that we’re making my grandma proud by bringing our neighborhood together everyday. To all our long time regulars, thank you so much for helping us get to where we are now, and to our new customers, we look forward to sharing our passion with you. We will love and remember her every day.
